• Having watched the Parliamentary debate on #Lockdown2, #Boris gave a poor defence of his policies. We need better to win public confidence in these new restrictive measures.

  • I lost confidence in the #Boris gov’t a long time ago. But now I have lost confidence in the House of Commons. No serious scrutiny of the Lockdown and Boris just blisters his way through. #nodemocracy

  • Watching #Boris at the Despatch Box today, he is all blunder and bluster. How anyone can take any confidence while he is in charge I do not know. Public confidence in and adherence to restrictive measures is a key issue. But nothing this gov’t does helps on that front.

  • So #Boris snubs the business community again by cancelling his appearance at the #CBI conference. He needs businesses on board so we can weather the lockdown. But he is not prepared to front up to a potentially critical audience.

  • I’m fed up with politicians playing party politics with #Coronavirus. We need a cross-party Commission to steer policy in this area, with representatives from businesses, the TUC and the health community. That is the only way we can rebuild public confidence in the measures taken

  • Based on what happened in April/May in #Lockdown1, it looks like UK GDP will drop 8 percent or so in November as a result of #Lockdown2. However, this is a loss of around 17 percent of GDP on a year ago. All of this inflicted by government policy - not by the pandemic itself. https://t.co/pLoiIPdb1K

  • Michael Gove is on @RidgeOnSunday talking as if #Lockdown2 ends on 4 December. In fact it is due to end on Wed 2 December. If senior gov’t ministers don’t know the details of their own policy, what hope have the rest of us got?

  • Retail, hospitality, transport and entertainment are the sectors most affected by #Lockdown2. If output in these sectors falls back to April levels in November, UK GDP will be about 8 percent below August and 16 percent below the pre-pandemic level. A big hit to UK #GDP.

  • Quick calculation suggests that #Lockdown2 will cut UK GDP in November by around 8 percent relative to August (the latest monthly figure we have). This means a 16pc loss of GDP compared with Feb 2020, before the first Lockdown. Not as bad as -25pc in Apr/May but still a big hit.

  • Discussion of another lockdown in the UK raises the question “who runs the British economy?” - the Chancellor of the Exchequer, or a bunch of health professionals on a group called SAGE? The first lockdown cost 25 percent of GDP. Are we going to have to pay the same price again?

  • If we have another national lockdown, let’s hope UK gov’t doesn’t try to shut down “non-essential” retail or restrict supermarket sales of “non-essential” items, as in Wales. Consumers not gov’t should define what is essential, which varies according to individual circumstances.
