• Latest official figures show 500,000 jobs lost in past 6 months but other data points to much bigger job looses: 782,000 drop in payrolls + about 500k decline in self-employment = nearly 1.3 million. True unemployment rate is probably 6-7pc, compared to the official 4.8pc rate.

  • Where is the latest UK data on #Coronavirus cases, hospitalisations and deaths which is normally released at 4pm? Maybe health journalists like @BBCHughPym can tell us. The PM is giving a press conference but no mention of the latest data. Very odd!

  • More fireworks tonight. I doubt these are socially distanced fireworks parties following lockdown regs. Businesses have been shut down and people ignore the regulations. It makes me sick!

  • What makes Fleetwood Mac such a good band? (1) Mick Fleetwood and John McVie - a drum/bass engine. (2) An exceptional guitarist - Lindsey Buckingham (3) Brilliant songwriters - Christine, Lindsey, Stevie.

  • I am pretty sure we will see massive non-compliance with the latest Lockdown restrictions in England.
    Andrew Sentance Thu 05 Nov 2020 19:45
  • So, we know a big problem with #Coronavirus restrictions is lack of compliance. So very disappointed to hear massive firework parties going on locally this evening. What is the point of us following the rules when there is so much flagrant abuse.
    Andrew Sentance Thu 05 Nov 2020 19:10
  • I can hear many fireworks being set off locally here in #Broxbourbe. I can’t believe these firework parties are being confined to one household, but I may be wrong.

  • I like Joe Biden. I like the way he conducts himself - calm and measured. Trump is wild and erratic, and often lies. I know who I would prefer to be next President. Let’s hope it all works out.
    Andrew Sentance Thu 05 Nov 2020 15:15
  • So much contrast between the humility of Joe Biden and the self-promoting of bombast from Donald Trump. Let us hope that the best man wins.

  • Hi @IanKingSky - you say #BoE will own a quarter of UK gilts. More like a half. @notayesmansecon may have a better view. The last figure I saw for UK gilt issuance was £1.5 trn at end-2018. Adjusting for recent QE and recent borrowing trends, #BoE had more than half, not 1/4.

  • Another predictable injection of #QE by @bankofengland. 150bn takes total since March to £470bn, more than in previous 11 years! Not clear this is necessary or desirable in the current situation. Public health measures & fiscal support are needed, not excessive monetary stimulus
