- Did Boris deliberately switch off his connection to the House of Commons after his statement this afternoon? He and his team seem to have made little effort to restore the connection and Matt Hancock is remarkably well prepared to answer questions (which was presumably the plan).

- Big news from PM’s statement is reopening of “non-essential” retail, hairdressers and gyms. In addition to likely partial easing in “stay at home” and restrictions in the hospitality sector, this should allow GDP to bounce back by 6-7pc in Dec vs Nov. Chart on this to follow.

- It is amazing that the news channels know more about future gov’t policy announcements than the Cabinet and the House of Commons. A sign of a weak and ineffective gov’t.

- I discovered recently that @bankofengland had halted their Inflation 2.0 competition for schools back in 2017. I always thought this competition was a good way of engaging 6th Form students with economic policy issues. A great shame it has been quietly buried.

- Amazing that @pritipatel thought that shouting and swearing at her staff was normal behaviour; her defence was that nobody told her that this sort of behaviour is wrong. Nobody should need to be told that. It just is, and in a position of responsibility you should know that.

- So an independent civil servant decides that @pritipatel had breached the ministerial code but #Boris decides not. So the honest civil servant resigns and the bullying minister and her boss continue in office. It stinks!

- Some good news on UK #Coronavirus cases. The daily total is below 20,000 for the first time since 2nd November - which was a Monday when the total is normally low due to the weekend. Lowest Wednesday total since mid-October. Hopefully a promising sign.

- UK CPI inflation was 0.7 percent in October but is being held down by the cut in VAT to 5pc in the hospitality sector. At constant taxes, CPI inflation is 2.4 pc ie above #BoE target not below. If the VAT cut is reversed in January, as planned, inflation will pick up strongly.
