Compensation costs for private industry workers increased 2.7 percent over the year ended June 2020. In June 2019, the increase was 2.6 percent. Wages and salaries increased 2.9 percent for the 12-month period ending in June 2020 and 3.0 percent in June 2019. The cost of benefits rose 2.0 percent for the 12-month period ending in June 2020 and 1.8 percent in June 2019.

From September 2019 to December 2019, job gains at opening and expanding private-sector establishments numbered 7.8 million; this was an increase of 490,000 jobs from the previous quarter. Over this period, gross job losses from closing and contracting private-sector establishments were 7.0 million, a decrease of 291,000 jobs from the previous quarter. The difference between job gains and job losses yielded a net employment gain of 792,000 jobs during the fourth quarter of 2019.

The national unemployment rate in June was 11.2 percent, not seasonally adjusted, up from 3.8 percent a year earlier. Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey, had the highest unemployment rate in June, 34.3 percent. Logan, Utah-Idaho, and Idaho Falls, Idaho, had the lowest unemployment rates, 3.5 percent and 3.6 percent, respectively. A total of 267 areas had June jobless rates below the U.S. rate of 11.2 percent, 116 areas had rates above it, and 6 areas had rates equal to that of the nation.

From June 2019 to June 2020, 307 metropolitan areas had decreases in nonfarm payroll employment and 82 were essentially unchanged. Employment in Atlantic City-Hammonton and Ocean City, both in New Jersey, decreased by 29.2 percent and 28.7 percent, respectively. These were the largest over-the-year percentage losses in employment among metropolitan areas. Employment decreased 40,000 in the Atlantic City area and 15,600 in the Ocean City area.
