Work-related amputations resulted in 6,200 cases with days away from work in 2018. That was about 0.5 percent of all the cases resulting in days away from work. Although these types of injuries are not frequent, they resulted in workers taking a median of 31 days away from work to recover. The median recovery time for all types of injuries in 2018 was 9 days away from work.
In 2018, 58 percent of amputations (3,580 cases) involved some type of machinery. Parts and materials were involved in 15 percent of amputations. Tools, instrument and equipment, including powered and unpowered hand tools, were involved in 7 percent.

More than 37 million people filed for unemployment insurance benefits in the 10 weeks from the week ending March 21 to the week ending May 23. The unemployment rate in April was 14.7 percent. Or was it 19.5 percent? There were 23 million people counted as unemployed in mid-April, and 18 million people received unemployment insurance (UI) benefits at that time. How can all of these things be true? What’s the real story?
Back in October, I set the record straight on how counts of people receiving unemployment insurance benefits differ from how BLS measures unemployment. These two measures offer distinct but related measures of trends in joblessness, some of which I will explore here. I will focus only on data from states’ regular UI programs, but other programs exist as well. Here’s the bottom line: When all is said and done, the two measures track each other very closely.
The number of people filing for UI benefits reached record levels in recent weeks as a...

Workers, economists, human resource professionals, and many others are interested in how much Americans earn. Do some workers in a particular city earn more than workers in another one? By how much? What if one worker has more experience, compared with a worker who is just starting out in their career?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) produces two establishment surveys that report the wages and salaries of jobs: the National Compensation Survey (NCS) and the Occupational Employment Statistics (OES). NCS produces wage estimates that have detailed information on job characteristics, such as full-time and part-time or union and nonunion job status. Estimates from the NCS also provide information on a worker’s level, which measures knowledge, job controls and complexity, contacts, and physical environment required by an occupation.1
The NCS has a sample made up of about 12,800 private industry establishments and 1,500 state and local government establishments....

Cashiers (with employment of 865,150) and stockers and order fillers (543,790) were the largest occupations in food and beverage stores; these two occupations made up nearly half of jobs in this industry.
