In May 2020, the proportion of the statewide civilian noninstitutional population age 16 and over with a job was less than 50.0 percent in 10 states. Nevada had the lowest employment–population ratio in May 2020, at 41.9 percent. This compared with 61.1 percent in May 2019.

A total of 146 workers suffered fatal injuries in incidents involving tractors in 2018. This was the lowest number of work deaths involving tractors on record between 2011 and 2018. Among fatal incidents involving tractors, 103 of the 146 deaths in 2018 occurred to workers age 55 or older, and 67 deaths were to workers age 65 or older.

Total separations decreased by 5.8 million to 4.1 million, the single largest decrease since December 2000. Job openings increased to 5.4 million on the last business day of May.

The number of hires increased by 2.4 million to a record 6.5 million in May. This was the largest monthly hires increase since December 2000. Total separations decreased by 5.8 million to 4.1 million, the single largest decrease since December 2000. Job openings increased to 5.4 million on the last business day of May.

A total of 109 areas had jobless rates of less than 10.0 percent and 16 areas had rates of at least 20.0 percent. The national unemployment rate in May was 13.0 percent, not seasonally adjusted, up from 3.4 percent a year earlier.
Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina, Hawaii, had the highest unemployment rate in May, 33.4 percent, followed by Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey, 32.4 percent. Logan, Utah-Idaho, had the lowest unemployment rate, 4.8 percent. The next lowest rates were in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Idaho Falls, Idaho, 5.0 percent and 5.5 percent, respectively. A total of 245 areas had May jobless rates below the U.S. rate of 13.0 percent, 142 areas had rates above it, and 2 areas had rates equal to that of the nation.

These gains reflect a partial resumption of economic activity that had been curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic in April and March, when employment fell by a total of 22.2 million in the 2 months combined. In June, nonfarm employment was 14.7 million, or 9.6 percent, lower than its February level.
