The UK is “prospering vastly” following the split from Brussels, the Brexit minister said as he stressed the Government’s aim to create “a high wage, high productivity economy”, rather than one “reliant on cheap labour”.
Brexit “gloom-mongers” have therefore been proved wrong following the UK’s departure from the European Union, Lord Frost told Parliament.
The Tory frontbencher made his comments as he outlined a plan to overhaul retained EU law, left over after the ending of the transition period in December 2020, to ensure rules were tailored to the UK “rather than the average”.

Last week, I wrote about the trauma I endure when going to the hairdresser. However, there was an upside. As the barber’s scissors danced around my head, he remarked that I had thick hair. I agreed, without wanting to seem boastful of something utterly outwith my control. But I ventured the opinion that, while I was not succumbing to baldness, I was beginning to go grey quite a bit at the sides.
“That hair’ll stay, though, sir,” he observed.
I looked pleased.

ICAS supports tax simplification as a vital part of building an effective and trusted tax administration system but making simplification happen isn’t simple.
Why simplify tax?
The complexity of UK tax legislation is reflected in complex tax administration systems which are difficult to use and do not facilitate compliance. Compliance is also undermined because many taxpayers do not understand their basic tax obligations. Complexity drives up costs for taxpayers (and HMRC) and undermines trust in the tax system. For businesses, it can divert resources away from running the business into wrestling with tax administration.
