Early in the coronavirus pandemic Congress formed an emergency system to ensure free testing for the virus and to help uninsured Americans avoid big hospital bills for Covid-19 treatment. Most large insurance companies waived cost-sharing agreements for Covid-19 patients at the same time. But as many bills arrive, not all patients are benefiting from the system. The Wall Street Journal identified four key groups that, based on their coverage status, experience the financial ramifications of infection in different ways.
The share of adults reporting symptoms of anxiety or depression ballooned during the pandemic, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, rising to 40.9% by mid-July. Colleges, traditionally tasked with helping students develop into mature, independent adults, have over the years sought to educate students outside the classroom about sexual health. For many, this has routinely included such services as providing contraceptives, organizing sexual health testing drives and offering counseling.
But, when hundreds of college administrators and health professionals from across the U.S. gathered in July for a two-day virtual summit to plan and discuss reopening college campuses—and commiserate...
Parents who are forced to leave work to care for their kids as a result of virtual K-12 education could boost the unemployment rate by 2.6 percentage points if those parents are counted as unemployed, according to research from hedge fund Brevan Howard Asset Management. The research shows that 4.3 million workers may have to stay home if they cannot find childcare. The August unemployment rate was down to 8.4% but if many parents are unable to continue working it could impact the economic recovery in the U.S.
Now could be a great time to catch up with former co-workers, said Addie Swartz, CEO of reacHire, which develops return-to-work programs for women re-entering the workforce after a break. “People are more willing to be helpful, and you have to be willing to rely on others.” LinkedIn says applicants on the platform are nearly three times as likely to get a job at a company where they have a connection. If you are still trying to build your network, consider virtual events through industry networking groups, many of which are offering free webinars, Swartz said.

Police officers killed Michael F. Reinoehl, an antifa supporter suspected in the death of a right-wing activist in Portland, Ore., as they moved in to arrest him on Thursday evening, according to law-enforcement officials.
Reinoehl, who voiced his support for the loosely organized left-wing group antifa on social media, was wanted on an arrest warrant for murder. Portland police had been investigating him in the fatal shooting of pro-Donald Trump activist Aaron “Jay” Danielson last Saturday, according to his sister and a law enforcement source with knowledge of the matter. Danielson’s shooting took place following a night of clashes between protesters of police brutality and a caravan of trucks bearing signs and slogans supporting President Trump.
