Why IHS Markit?
Extraordinary times call for extraordinary efforts: to understand, adapt and overcome.
The Covid-19 pandemic crisis is no exception. For once, the resulting economic crisis was triggered by medical rather than financial failings and the financial markets are part of the solution, rather than the problem.
The loan market, in particular, has helped ease the economic stress. It has remained open throughout, working with governments and regulators to assist clients and stakeholders - it has widely been recognised as having performed well.
We look forward to you joining us at our first ever LMA Syndicated Loans Virtual Conference as we discuss the implications of Covid-19, how the loan market has responded, what more can be done and how we look to meet all the other challenges and opportunities before us.
With the chance to listen to virtual panel discussions, take part in interactive debates and to network online with what promises to be the largest and...
We have partnered with BondCliQ to embed US corporate bond pricing content and interactive functionality within thinkFolio, our leading multi-asset investment management platform. The collaboration will provide click-to-view, consolidated, pre-trade, institutional quote data from 34 dealers, and post-trade, normalized, analytics-enriched TRACE data directly within thinkFolio's modular screens.
BondCliQ's consolidated quote display generates centralized, institutional pricing data for both buy-side institutions and sell-side dealers. This facilitates a more efficient, institutional, secondary trading market where dealers can compete for buy-side order flow by improving the accuracy and reliability of their quotes. When combined with thinkFolio's order and execution management workflows and connectivity footprint, BondCliQ's pre- and post-trade content will provide pre-trade liquidity insight for securities of interest and aid in further demonstrating best execution to...
IHS Markit's SVP and global head of commercial strategy for our financial technology solutions, Clayton Albertson, sat down with Private Equity International to discuss how digital tools can help managers address increasing complexity and demands for data, particularly during times of volatility. In the article, Clayton addresses 5 key questions:
The recent EUR Price Alignment Interest (PAI) and discounting switch from EONIA to €STR for cleared derivatives is now in the books. From 27 July 2020, any EUR cleared swap or EUR swaption delivering a cleared swap follows the conventions set by the clearing houses (e.g. CME, Eurex, LCH) and €STR is now the standard rate for discounting those instruments.
The new EUR PAI and discounting conventions delivered €STR discounting risk to all parties involved in cleared derivatives. On the switch day, price transparency and compensation calculation were made simpler thanks to the fixed 8.5bps spread between EONIA and €STR. Due to their more complex nature, the case for swaptions required an amendment to the 2006 ISDA Definitions published as Supplement 64 on March 30, 2020.

Executive Summary
IHS Markit analyzed the 3000 largest companies in the United States to identify which issuers and investors would be most affected by the SEC’s proposal to increase the 13F threshold to $3.5B. At an issuer level, we found that micro cap and Energy companies would be most severely affected, while mega cap and Utilities companies would see the least impact. At an investor level, we found the proposal would noticeably impact alternative and high turnover investors, while index and low turnover investors would see little impact. Finally, we looked at activist investors and found that 86% of them would no longer be required to file 13F’s. The analysis below is a follow up to our initial article written on July 13th which examined the proposals impact on issuers top-100 shareholder lists.
Recap of the SEC Proposal
The proposal states that investment managers with less than $3.5 billion in U.S. stockholdings would no longer need to...
As global supply chains become increasingly complex, it is more important than ever to incorporate location risk into your vendor risk assessment process.
From the outset, it is critical to define risk appetite and risk treatment strategy based on location when considering third-party portfolios. Depending on the nature of service, such considerations go beyond the location of a company's headquarters, extending to where data will be processed and stored.
Below are best practices for aligning vendor risk with various types of elevated location risk:
Political violence or operational risk: If a vendor provides services for you from a location with elevated political violence or operational risk, extra attention should be paid to the vendor's business continuity plan and disaster recovery capabilities. Equally important is a review your own business continuity plan in relation to vendors in locations like these.
Political risk: If a vendor provides...

Few financial processes are in greater need of digital transformation than onboarding, where regulatory reform and growing transaction volumes have pushed onboarding teams to breaking point.
Yet that transformational potential has taken time to emerge. A lack of bandwidth among onboarding teams, a lack of buy-in at the organizational level and a lack of cohesion and maturity in the onboarding technology landscape have left many teams clinging to emails and spreadsheets to manage the workflow.
But in 2020, we have reached the tipping point. Onboarding teams are making time to explore their technology options, empowered by a leadership that recognizes the importance of onboarding as a key customer touchpoint and competitive advantage.
In the latest development in the IBOR transition, on the weekend of 25 July, we saw the major CCPs perform the much-anticipated Euro discounting and price alignment transition from using EONIA to EuroSTR (a.k.a. €STR) for all Euro OTC interest rate products. We understand that all compensation payments have now settled, many of which were straight through processed into firms' risk systems by MarkitSERV's Netting Synchronization Service.
The question market watchers have been asking is would the hereto anaemic trading activity in EuroSTR pick-up following the switchover of discounting and PAI/PAA at the major CCPs?
Well after one week we have the answer… Prior to the switchover, in the first 18 trading days of July, EuroSTR made up just 5% of all Euro OIS trades and since the switchover, the last 5 trading days of July, it has made up just over 11% of all Euro OIS trades. So, we are far from reaching a tipping point but it's certainly a significant jump in EuroSTR...
thinkFolio, our leading multi-asset class investment management platform, has integrated with Investor Access, making it the first portfolio and order management platform to provide seamless fixed income primary market workflow for the buy side community.
The integration allows thinkFolio front office users to monitor new issues via the Investor Access Deal Monitor platform, subscribe to those assets, and trigger new security information to thinkFolio and client downstream applications. The workflow and cohesive tool kit leverages the Investor Access Deal Services API and FIX messaging, providing users with the ability to orchestrate allocations at point of order creation and to initiate all required compliance checks before placement.
"The inertia driving further electronification of fixed income trading activity is noted and this theme has now evolved to the primary markets," said Brett Schechterman, Managing Director and Global Head of thinkFolio at IHS Markit....
The first half of the year resulted in significant credit volatility, with CDS indices playing a key role in investors' ability to manage credit exposure. As during the Global Financial Crisis, market disruption led to a surge in CDS index trading due to their ability to withstand large trading sizes. This came through in index volumes across CDX and iTraxx that were significantly greater YoY, along with large increases in tranched index trading. Interesting technical factors also emerged within the CDS indices, as index skews and curve shapes shifted during the period. The following will provide a global overview of CDS index performance across IG and HY markets in the first half of 2020, covering returns, credit events, changes in curve shape and index skew as well as the latest trading volumes.
Performance
CDS indices began the year on a calm note, spiralling downward towards the end of February due to coronavirus impact that tore through risky assets. However,...
Advances in financial technology couldn't have come at a better time, as private equity firms and their portfolio companies absorb the lingering effects of events like the WeWork saga and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new partnership between Workiva and IHS Markit gave me a chance for a Q&A with Jennifer Theiss, Managing Director, Global Head of Private Markets Sales, at IHS Markit. I wanted to tap her firm's expertise as a leader in information and analytics technology for the financial services, energy, and transportation industries, and get her take on recent events.
So, let's get right to it.
IHS Markit Hires Another Ex-CME Repository Services Exec to Head Americas Reporting
IHS Markit has hired Igor Kaplun as executive director of MarkitSERV’s integrated reporting business, responsible for leading the expansion of the vendor’s regulatory reporting capabilities in the Americas.
Kaplun previously spent almost 11 years at CME Group, most recently as director of its global repository services, where he spent six years in various roles, having started at CME as a senior account manager
Across the world, the first half of 2020 has brought more unprecedented changes than anyone could have predicted. This is especially true in primary and secondary markets, where the model for corporate and investor engagement has dramatically transformed - going forward, one can argue that things will never be the same.
The restrictions we experienced throughout the historic COVID-19 pandemic have rapidly accelerated our reliance on virtual events and video conferencing, which at the same time, has brought to light the competitive advantage of these channels. Based on what we've learned in recent months, it is clear that a brand-new horizon is emerging for sellside institutions.
With this in mind, and as part of our long-term strategy to enable greater digital engagement across the Global Markets Group at IHS Markit, we have expanded our strategic alliance with OpenExchange, a recognized leader in virtual communication technology.
