Trotter was raised in Boston’s Hyde Park. After graduating valedictorian from an all-white high school, he earned a degree from Harvard and was the first man of color to receive Phi Beta Kappa honors.

After escaping slavery in 1838, Douglass settled in Massachusetts and became an author, speaker, statesman, and abolitionist who used his words and influence to denounce slavery and promote equal rights for all. He toured Ireland and Great Britain to give anti-slavery lectures.
