Here is a state-by-state list of many of the upcoming sales-tax holidays, according to information supplied by the Federation of Tax Administrators and the state websites.

    MarketWatch Sun 07 Aug 2022 00:50

I am soon to inherit a sizable sum of money from an uncle with whom no one in my family still speaks; I’m the only one who has stayed in contact with him. While it seems a bit grotesque to think about money while someone is on their deathbed, this is a large enough sum that I need to plan for how I will save/invest it.

  • The Great Barrier Reef, rich with wildlife and a major tourist draw, was greatly damaged in 2016 and 2017 by underwater heat waves aggravated by climate change. Here’s a welcome rebound. Link
    MarketWatch Sun 07 Aug 2022 00:20

Two-thirds of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef recorded the highest amount of coral cover in nearly four decades, a development cheered around the world but one that shouldn’t overshadow how vulnerable the reef remains to climate change and mass bleaching.

On the central and northern regions, hard coral cover reached 33% and 36% this year, respectively, the highest level recorded in the past 36 years of monitoring, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, a government agency, said this week.

My sister is two years older than me.

We both are married and have incomes in the low six figures, and our husbands have similar earnings.

When she was in her 20s, my sister and her husband accumulated a lot of credit-card debt, which my parents paid off (twice). I think it was around $50,000 each time. I have always been fiscally responsible and never needed my parents to bail me out.

Inherited IRAs are a gift to beneficiaries, but the rules surrounding distributions from these accounts are not.

Beneficiaries must follow a 10-year rule for distributions, which began after the Secure Act passed in December 2019, but the requirements are intricate and, for some, tricky. The Internal Revenue Service issued proposed regulations about the matter, which is the agency’s interpretation of the rules.

The Federal Reserve doesn’t love the employment report released Friday, which showed that 528,000 more jobs were created in July while the unemployment rate fell to 3.5%, matching the lowest rate in more than 50 years.

They ought to love the strong market. After all, one of the Fed’s official duties is to foster “maximum employment” and this report shows we are close to that goal. Yay!!

More than 80% of the S&P 500 index’s companies have reported second-quarter results so far, and at least five key takeaways have emerged — including that Wall Street was far more worried about the coming earnings season than it needed to be.

That doesn’t mean investors were wrong; the numbers and management commentary have confirmed that inflation, the supply chain and weakening demand have continued to act as headwinds, and may continue to do so for the foreseeable future. So while investors may have been too pessimistic heading into earnings, it’s still too soon to suggest they could start being optimistic.

Social Security recipients are going to get what’s shaping up to be a huge cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) next year. But if it’s anything like the big increase they got this year, they could wind up even further behind.

This much we know: With the current rate of inflation running at 9.1%, the COLA will be big. But it was big last year—5.9%, the biggest hikes in decades—and yet Social Security recipients have been taking it on the chin, inflation-wise, anyway.

Roughly 1,900 deaths are now being recorded daily, which means the U.S. is suffering more deaths every two days than in the terrorist attacks of Sept 11, 2001.

My mother has stated that when she and my father pass away, they’d like for my three siblings and I to split any inheritance four equal ways. She has also stated that she would want the grandchildren to get something too. I am single and childless, as I intend to continue to be.

At this point, all of my siblings have offspring totaling seven grandchildren, with more planned on the way. To me, it seems more fair to split the inheritance four ways, and then to state in the will that each parent/sibling give an amount my mother and father want each grandchild to receive.
